A few years ago I was lecturing at a convention. Between lectures, I manned a booth and visited with folks about herbs, and peddled my books and herbal concoctions. A lady walked by the booth. She gasped when she saw me and ran over to me and gave me a hug. “Do you remember me?” […]
As an herbalist, I’ve always been amazed at how many of our wonderful medicinal plants have specific applications for women. It’s almost as if God knew that the ladies would be doing lots more than their share in this project and put some wonderful green things in place to lighten some of their load. I’ve […]
Having this herbal and naturopathic experience and a veterinary degree, and also having a state board of pharmacy license and a DEA license and a veterinary license and all the other fancy pieces of paper that say I can poke pills and needles into dogs and other critters, has given me unique opportunities and choices that most healers don’t have. Basically, when a sick dog comes to see me, I can use whatever the heck I want to use in its treatment. As a result, I’ve had the opportunity to use herbs to treat everything from the common cold to gunshot wounds, rattlesnake bites, and gangrene. Over the years, I’ve used medications to treat those things as well. So, after a few decades of anecdotal research in my own practices, my opinions have developed pretty strongly on what works best for what.
Not long ago, I was doing surgery in my operating room at the clinic. I was working on Gus, a young Labrador retriever that had swallowed some rocks…several rocks. It wasn’t the first time. Several years ago there was a preparedness convention at a small town near my home. I’d been to several large conferences in previous weeks and was pretty tired of traveling. I also had tons of work to do in the herb gardens so I had decided not to go. Suddenly one morning, I had a […]
Hey Folks! As many of you know, I had a little unexpected brain surgery a few weeks ago. It turned out my meninges got bored and grew a nice sausage in the middle of my brain to surprise me with so my life could be interesting and I could have fun things to write blog […]
As an herbalist, I occasionally come across a person that has no faith in the efficacy of herbal medicines. Some are of that opinion because they simply have no information or experience with herbs. Others have had experience and been unsuccessful. I’ve found some common threads among folks that don’t believe in herbal medicine. Here […]
Update: (02/18/2021 – 9AM) Hey Folks, We wanted to give you all a quick update on dad. The surgery went very well. It was long (nearly 9 hours), but successful. He is still in the ICU for recovery and observation and probably won’t be released until Saturday or Sunday. So far, he has passed all […]
It’s a lovely day in the thyroid gland. Sam and Sally Thyrocyte are sitting on the banks of the thyroid artery watching the red blood cells go by, their toes dipping in the warm, rich plasma. A red blood cell stops and offers the young couple some fresh oxygen molecules. Sam tips the RBC with […]
