Description :
Native to the Mediterranean, Chaste Tree is a multi-trunked shrub that grows slowly to 15 to 20 feet tall with a spread of 10 to 15 feet. The plant needs full sun and very well-drained soil. Hand-sized leaves are light green on top and silvery underneath. There are 3 to 5 finger leaves in the leaf cluster, each about 2 inches long with toothed edges. Numerous flowers develop along their own stems that are abut 4 to 8 inches in length. The flowers mature starting with the ones closest to the base of the stem, moving out from there. Four to five weeks after the first flowers bloom, the entire bush is bright with purpleish flowers. Later, green, egg-shaped berries appear that later turn to purple and then black as they ripen. During The Medieval Times, Chaste Tree was often taken Internally as tinctures made from the berries to treat menstrual problems and infertility. The berries have a peppery taste.
