The American elm is a tree native to the eastern region of Canada and the eastern and central region of the United States. Its name in English refers to the slippery consistency of the inner bark when chewed or when mixed with water. The inner bark (not the entire bark) is used as medicine.
In manufacturing, elm is used in some baby food and adult nutritional products, and in some oral lozenges, used to soothe a mild sore throat.
Native Americans used the inner bark of slippery elm topically on external wounds, as well as internal problems to supposedly support them with sore throats and diarrhea.
Slippery elm contains a substance called mucilage, which creates a gel when mixed with water. You can take this mixture by mouth to coat the mouth and digestive organs. This makes slippery elm an effective natural support of digestive conditions.
Slippery elm is rich in antioxidants and can help stimulate mucus secretion to support various other digestive issues.
