Saw Palmetto, a member of the palm family, is a scrubby tree native to the Eastern United States from South Carolina to Florida. It is also found along the coast of Southern California. The trees grow to between 6 and 10 feet tall and has a three-foot wide fan of long, spiked leaves at the top. Saw Palmetto grows in sandy soil, producing fruits throughout the summer months and into October. The fruit is bluish-black when fully ripe and has a distinctive sweet aroma, with a taste that is described as slightly soapy and acrid.
History and Folklore:
Native American tribes of the Southeast United States used Saw Palmeto for making baskets and ropes, among other things. American botanist John Lloyd was one of the first to note the positive effects that the fruit had on grazing animals, concluding that it may assist humans as well. As early as the 1700’s, Native American tribes in Florida and Georgia were eating Saw Palmetto berries to fend off starvation and as a urinary tonic and prostate support for men. It has been used traditionally for benign prostate enlargement.
Cultivation and Harvest:
To harvest the root, carefully dig around the base of the plant that is 2 to 3 years old. Remove dirt from the loosened area to expose as much of the root as possible. The roots can then be dried in bundles and chopped or ground for teas and tinctures.

Do not use if pregnant or nursing. D. Do not use on people who have bleeding disorders or who will undergo surgery while taking the herb. Do not use in those who have hypertension, liver disorders, or stomach disorders.
