Description :
Puncture Vine is a low-growing warm temparature annual that populates roadsides, trails and other walkable areas. It usually grows flat to the ground in sunny locations in dry rocky soil. The hairy stems radiate from a central crown to a diameter of 3.5 feet. In shade, they sometimes grow taller along with taller plants. The compound leaves grow on opposite sides of the stem. The hairy leaves only grow to about 1/8 inch around. Five-petaled, yellow flowers that are about 3/8 inch wide form and then mature into five burrs. The burs are hard and each has two to four sharp spines which like to puncture bare feet, thin-soled shoes, and bicycle tires. The burrs resemble a goat’s head which lends to the common name of goat’s head.
History and Folklore:
Puncture Vine has historically been used medicinally in parts of Asia and Eastern Europe for sexual deficiency in both men and women. In males, Puncture Vine blossom and leaf were supposedly associated with increased sperm production, sexual endurance and testosterone levels.
Cultivation and Harvest:
Harvest Pucture Vine when the flowers begin to blossom. Look for a mature plant that displays even growth and color throughout the entire plant. Concentrate on getting the outer portion of the spreading vine including only those pods that are about to blossom. If the pods have already turned grey or brown, it is too late. Dry the harvested blossoms for use in teas and tinctures.
