Description :
A member of the mint family, Motherwort has distinctly square stems and grows to between 2 and 4 feet tall. The lower leaves grow in five-lobed clusters while the upper leaves are three-lobed. The white or pink flowers cluster around the upper leaves. As the flowers grow and mature, they grow and extend up to a foot above the top leaf clusters. Taken internally as a tincture or tea, Motherwort has been used by Old English Herbalists to aid with many different heart ailments. They Commonly Applied Motherwart externally as a salve to aid with itchy skin.
History and Folklore:
17th century English herbalists found Motherwort to be useful in treating all manner of heart ailments, anxiety, and as a tonic for women. Some Native American tribes used Motherwort infusion as a gynecological aid for female ills, others used it as a gastrointestinal aid to facilitate digestion.
Cultivation and Harvest:
Harvest the entire herb in the fall, after it has flowered.
