In certain parts of Germany and Hungary, this plant is cultivated for its seeds, which are roasted, ground and used as a substitute for coffee. Its culture is the same as that of the common pea or tare. The name applied to the seeds, Swedish coffee, would indicate that it is also grown in Scandinavia. Astragalus caryocarpus Ker-Gawl. Ground Plum. Mississippi region of North America. The unripe fruits are edible and are eaten raw or cooked. Astragalus christianus Linn. Asia Minor and Syria. In Taurus, the roots of the great, yellow milk-vetch are sought as an article of food. Astragalus creticus Lam. Greece. This plant yields tragacanth. Astragalus florulentus Boiss. & Haussk. Persia. The plant yields a manna. Astragalus gummifer Labill. Syria. This is another species supplying a source of tragacanth. Astragalus hamosus Linn. Mediterranean region to India. The plant is grown particularly on account of the singularity of its fruits which, before maturity, resemble certain worms. They are of a mediocre taste but are employed in salads chiefly to cause an innocent surprise. Astragalus kurdicus Boiss. Kurdistan and Syria. The plant affords tragacanth. Astragalus leioclados Boiss. Persia. Tragacanth is produced by this plant. Astragalus mexicanus A. DC. Open plains and prairies from Illinois westward and southward. The unripe fruits are edible and are eaten raw or cooked by travelers.

Botanical:Echinacea angustifolia is a perennial that grows up to ½ m high. The linear-lanceolate and lanceolate leaves are narrowed at the base, three-nerved, undivided. The stems usually carry a single flower head, the leaves of the shell are arranged like a roof tile. The purple-red or white ray flowers are 2-2.5 cm long and longer, two to three teeth, spreading apart. The fruits bear pappus crowns. The plant prefers limescale and dry slopes. It blooms from May to August. Echinacea purpurea is very similar to the previous species. It grows slightly taller and has rough, mostly sawn leaves. The lower ones are five-nerved, oval and long petiolate, the upper oval-lanceolate. The leaves of the cover form three rows. On prairies and sandbars in the United States. west of Ohio the plant is native. It blooms in July and August. Historical and general: Echinacea has long been known as an antiseptic in American folk medicine. One day a homeopathic doctor is said to have encountered a "squaw" (Indian woman) crushing echinacea plants between stones. She told him that the vegetable pulp so obtained was used to bandage wounds that the men had hunted while hunting, and that the wounds treated in this way healed quickly. The plant should also help against snake bites. The doctor bought Echinacea and tried it, which turned out to be successful. It soon brought Echinacea into widespread use in the United States of North America. effect The remedy is well known to every doctor in America, especially in Florida, as a very good remedy for infectious and septic fever. Homeopathy also makes extensive use of it. Such was Walsh (Walsh, boarding, Med. 1903 Magazine, No. 4, p. 250.) good success with Echinacea with carbuncles, abscesses, typhoid, meningitis, puerperal fever and other infectious diseases. With regard to the treatment of metritis with echinacea, Prof. J. Wood (J. Wood, quoted from Boudard, Propagateur de l'Homoeopathie 1925.) (that of Boudard as one of the most important gynecologists in the United States) as follows: "If blood tests, particularly white blood cells, suggest suppuration, I think Echinacea (which is based on the most scientific modern research) is the remedy par excellence to to maintain the opson index and to inhibit the infiltration and multiplication of infectious agents. " Stauffer (Stauffer, Klin. Hom. Arzneimittel., P. 441.), who also found the plant to be successful in all septic processes, writes that, especially when it comes to burns, "it magically takes away pain, makes you sleep, and heals (internally and accelerated externally). " Dahlke (Dahlke, Ges. Medicament., P. 116.) recommends use for deep nutritional disorders with suspected malignant diseases. Arnulphy (Arnulphy, Propagateur de l'Homoeopathie 1925, No. 3.) describes Echinacea as a valuable tool in the fight against all types of septemia, especially the most pronounced toxemia. According to him, Echinacea seems to have a specific effect on the appendix, since he was able to use it successfully in at least 60 cases of appendicitis. If furunculosis is a very large lump with extensive, deep tissue inflammation, or if the inflammation, as happens sometimes with the furuncles of the nose and lip, spreads to the neighboring veins and puts the patient at risk of life through thrombosis and septic seeding, Echinacea (5 drops every two hours on a little water and at the same time external to envelopes) is to be used according to Ritter (Ritter, Ther. d. Gegenw. 1936, H. 10, p. 460.). Haines (Haines, cit. B. Donner, Allgemeine hom. Ztg. 1931, p. 208.) further reports that in his extensive practice he often prescribed carbuncle Echinacea (every 3 hours) (externally Liberadol). With this type of treatment, he should only have incised a carbuncle once. For diabetic gangrene, Tellier (Tellier, L'Homoeopathie Moderne, 1935.) recommends Echinacea D 3, every two hours, whereby urine sugar "should disappear with the certainty of an experiment". Even after a message I received personally, the disappearance of acetone from the urine was observed in numerous cases in people with diabetes mellitus after administration of Echinacea "Teep" 0. The root contains essential oil (dried 1.25%, fresh 1.5%, the main component is a noncyclic tetrahydrosesquiterpene C 15 H28) (Bischoff, J. Amer. Journ. Pharm. Assoc. 1924, No. 13, p. 898 ( CC 1925).), Resin (1.9%), inulin, glucose, levulose, phenolic acid C9H10O 5 . Mp 207 (mainly trioxyphenylpropionic acid), betaine (0.1%), glycosidamyl alcohol (0.3%) (Heyl and Hart, J. Amer. Chem. Soc. 1915, No. 37, p. 1769 (CC 1915) .). Echinacea is said to stimulate salivation in larger doses (Lloyd, Pharmaceutical Review 1904, No. 1, p. 9). Echinacea purpurea was found to be as effective as E. angustifolia. Application in practice based on literature and a question: Echinacea is considered to be a very good antiseptic, which has proven itself particularly well internally, especially in septic and pyemic processes +) . Specifically, it is prescribed for: septic fever with chills, especially scarlet fever, diphtheria, angina tons . (here the inner presentation is supported by envelopes, gurgling, Echinacea 30 drops in half a cup of hot water, and brushing with pure Echinacin), and typhoid abdominalis, for appendicitis,Peritonitis, lymphangitis (hot echinacea envelopes are used for swelling of the glands - like 30 drops of the tincture on a ½ cup of water as above), and gallbladder infection with septic symptoms and severe vaccination and blood poisoning. In several cases of septicemia after postpartum fever, which had already been given up, Kleine, Wuppertal, by presenting Echinacea Ø , managed to achieve 10 drops per hour over a period of two days, and the fever quickly subsided to normal temperature. Echinacea is also used internally (by os or as an injection) and externally (in the form of brushing, application of the ointment, etc.) in all suppurations with a tendency to form abscesses (in the case of skin suppurations, the ointment applied too thickly can cause exacerbation), in boils, panaritias, Gangrene (also of diabetics), phlegmon, erysipelas, ulcers, especially ulcus cruris, ulcus ventriculi and duodeni (here according to Görgens internally with bolus alba), insect bites, toothache after tooth extraction with infection and poorly healing woundsapplied. Echinacea is particularly useful for first to third degree burn wounds. In order to achieve the fastest pain relief and healing without distorting scars, Brand, Kolberg, here , makes moist envelopes with Echinacea Ø (40 drops in ¼ liter of water), later Echinacea-Lanolin 10% is used, in addition Echinacea Ø-D 1 is prescribed internally . Fire describes the pain-relieving effect as superior to any bandage. William, Danzig, praises Echinacea for external use in very severe urticaria. Outside the scope of the above-mentioned indications, the remedy is occasionally used against heart failure, diabetes mellitus, gastritis, vomiting diarrhea, flatulence and after strength, Pfeddersheim, for arteriosclerosis. The "Teep" is made from fresh roots dug in autumn and flowers harvested in summer. The dried plant is almost ineffective.

Garlic. N. F. IV. Allium. English Garlic.—The genus Allium includes a large number of species, of which nearly seventy are indigenous in this country. Many, and perhaps all, of these species contain volatile oil upon which their activity depends. The cultivated garlic, of which the bulbs are official in the N. F., is Allium sativum L., for which, according to Griffith, A. canadense L., has been substituted and found efficient. Allium sativum, L., is a perennial plant with numerous bulbs which have a common membranous covering, from the base of which the fibers that constitute the proper root descend. The stem is simple, and rises about two feet. The leaves are long, flat, and grass-like, and sheathe the lower half of the stem. At the termination of the stem is a cluster of flowers and bulbs mingled together, and enclosed in a pointed spathe, which opens on one side and withers. The flowers are small and white, and make their appearance in July. This species of garlic grows wild in Sicily, Italy, and the south of France. The bulbs, or so-called cloves, are usually six or eight in number, oblong or wedge-shaped, and covered with dry membranous scales, with a pungent odor and a disagreeable and acrid taste. The N. F. description is as follows: "The fresh bulb of Allium sativum Linne (Fam. Liliaceae). Bulb subglobular, from 4 to 6 cm. in diameter, compound, consisting of from eight to fifteen bulbels and surrounded by one or two dry, whitish, membranaceous scales and attached to a flattened circular base from the lower portion of which arise numerous yellowish-white roots; bulbels more or less ovoid, in transverse section on three to four sided, the outer surface being convex, summit acute and narrowed into a thread-like fibrous portion, base truncate, each bulbel covered by one or two layers of whitish, membranaceous, scale-. like leaves, beneath which is the light brown or pinkish, thin and coriaceous layer of epidermis, cohering but easily separable from the solid portion of the bulbel. Odor of broken or bruised bulbels powerfully alliaceous, taste intensely pungent and persistent. Under the microscope, transverse sections of the bulbel show, three distinct portions: (a) the large fleshy scale consisting chiefly of parenchyma enclosing scattered vascular bundles, epidermis in both ventral and dorsal surfaces consisting of small tabular cells; (b) the middle layer nearly circular in outline, about 0.75 mm. in diameter, the tissues resembling those of the outer fleshy scale, but the cells containing numerous yellowish-brown plastids; (c) an innermost bright green layer consisting of a single leaf folded lengthwise along the midrib so that the ventral surfaces lie close together." The oil of garlic is of a dark brownish-yellow color, heavier than water, and decomposed at its boiling temperature. It may be purified by repeated distillation in a salt water bath, and is then lighter than water, of a pale yellow color, and not decomposed by boiling. Semmler obtained from garlic bulbs 0.09 per cent. of the volatile oil, sp. gr. at 14.5° C. (58° F.) 1.0525; it was yellow, having an intense odor and optically inactive. By fractional distillation he obtained four products, C6H12S2, C6H10S2, C6H10S3, and C6H10S4, which decomposed during distillation, and hence could only be obtained by distillation in vacuo. The oil, according to Semmler, is free from allyl sulphide, the latter having the sp. gr. 0.8991. (A. Pharm., 1892, p. 434.) The impure oil has an exceedingly pungent odor and a strong acrid taste, and, when applied to the skin, produces much irritation and sometimes even blisters. The pure oil combines with silver nitrate, forming a precipitate soluble in heated alcohol and afterwards separating in crystals. Besides this oil, fresh garlic, according to Cadet de Gassicourt, contains, in 1406 parts, 520 of mucilage, 37 of albumen, 48 of fibrous matter, and 801 of water. Bouillon-Legrange mentions among its constituents sulphur, a saccharine matter, and a small quantity of starch. The fresh bulbs yield upon pressure nearly a fourth part of juice, which is highly viscid, and so tenacious as to require dilution with water before it can be easily filtered. When dried, it serves as a lute for porcelain. It has the medicinal properties of the bulbs. Water, alcohol, and vinegar extract the virtues of garlic. Protracted boiling renders it inert. According to Semmler (A. Pharm., 1887, p. 927), Allium ursinum contains a volatile oil which consists mainly of vinyl-sulphide, C4H6S or (C2H3)2S. Medicinal Properties and Uses.—The use of garlic as a medicine and as a condiment can be traced to earliest antiquity. When taken internally, and even when applied externally, the oil is absorbed and imparts its odor to the breath, urine, perspiration, etc. The oil of garlic has some influence upon the human system as a general mild stimulant. Its chief value in medicine is for its local action upon the stomach and as a stimulant expectorant. The garlic itself is sometimes employed as a rubefacient which, by yielding its volatile oil to absorption, stimulates the nervous system, especially in the case of young children. The oil may often be given with advantage in chronic bronchitis and in the advanced stages of obstinate acute bronchitis. It is especially valuable in the treatment of children when there is a distinct nervous element. In catarrhal pneumonia of young children the bruised garlic cloves are often applied as a poultice to the lungs, and similar applications were formerly used upon the feet for the nervous restlessness or even the convulsions of young children. Garlic clove may be swallowed either whole or cut into pieces of a convenient size, but the syrup has replaced most other methods of administration. The dose in substance is from half a drachm to two drachms (2-7.7 Gm.) of the fresh bulb. That of the juice is half a fluidrachm (1.8 mils). A syrup is official in the N. F. (see Part III).

The Family Herbal, 1812, was written by John Hill. - Olive Leaf

Botanical name: Olea europaea Olea. A large tree, native of the warmer parts of Europe and the East. The trunk is thick and rough. The branches are numerous, and stand irregularly; their bark is grey and smooth. The leaves are longish and broad, and of a deep green on the upper side, and whitish underneath, and of a firm texture; the flowers are small and yellow; the fruit is of the bigness of a small plum, but of longer shape, and has a very large stone within. The oil is the only produce of this tree used in medicine, it is pressed out of the fruit, and is excellent in disorders of the lungs, and against colics, and stoppages of urine. But in the latter cases the oil of sweet almonds fresh pressed is preferable, and for the first linseed oil; so that oil of olives, or as it called sallad oil is seldom used in medicine, unless these others cannot be had.

The 1841 Thompsonian Materia Medica by Samuel Thompson - Red Clover

TRIFollUM PRATENSE. Flores, Folia—the flowers and leaves. Stalk ascending, smoothish. Leaflets ovate, sub-en tire. Stipules awned. Spikes dense, ovate. Lower tooth of the calyz shorter than the tube of the corol, and longer than the other teeth. It is too well known to need a further descrip tlon. CANCER PLASTER. Take a brass kettle that will hold eighteen or twenty gallons and fill it with the heads of red clover, pressed close together, with some heavy substance on the top to keep them down, and pour in water till the clover is covered. Boil it one hour over a lively fire, then strain off, and press out all the liquor from the clover. Fill the kettle again with fresh clover, boil in the liquor that was obtained from the first boiling, for the same length of time, and strain off as before, then simmer it over a slow fire till it is about the consistence of tar, when it is fit for use. Great care should be taken not to burn it, as that destroys in a great measure its virtues. Medical use.—This salve is adhesive, emollient, and anti styptic, good for old sores, cancers, sore lips, &c. When used, it should be spread upon a piece of split bladder, or on the mem branous covering of suet, lard, or tallow.

Trees, shrubs, herbs. Distinguished by astringency, succulent edible fruits, prickles and warts on woody surfaces; flowers regular, 5's; stamens inserted on calyx-tube, perigynous; calyx 4-5-lobed— when 5 the odd lobe posterior; anthers 2-celled; pistil 1-many, usually distinct; fruit often edible; seed exalbuminous. The yellow and white flowers resemble Ranunculacese, where, however, the stamens and pistils are inserted on the torus, but in Rosacese on the calyx; temperate climates; astringent, tonic, anthelmintic; fruit edible.
