What Do We Mean by Tea?
When most people think of “tea” they think of black tea or green tea prepared with leaves and shoots of the Camellia sinensis plant. Herbal Teas, however, can be an infusion or blend of various leaves, fruits, bark, roots, or flowers from any number of thousands of species of delicious or healthful plants. At our Core, we are an Herb Company and we LOVE HERBAL TEAS!

Benefits of Herbal Tea Over Traditional Tea

Herbal teas can showcase countless examples of fragrances, flavors, and health benefits.
Everything in excess is bad – even caffeine. One of the great benefits of herbal tea is that almost all of them are Caffeine Free! By switching from Green or Black Tea to Herbal Tea, you will be one step closer to a more balanced life.
Many Herbal Teas are Infused with plants that host a myriad of Medicinal Benefits! Who says you can’t have fun and feel good doing it!

How do you make good tea?
Weigh the amount of tea to be used, the ratio is 1 gram of tea for every 70 or 80 ml of water.
Place the leaves or the teabag in the cup or teapot.
Add the hot water to the leaves or tea bag at the appropriate temperature for the type of tea to be prepared.
Let the leaves or tea bag stand for the appropriate time for that type of tea and then remove the leaves from contact with water to avoid over-infusing the tea.

Common Mistakes when preparing a cup of tea
Adding too little tea to the amount of water to be prepared.
Leaving the tea in contact with water for too long, which will give us a more bitter infusion.
Thinking that we can give more flavor by leaving the leaves to infuse for a longer time in warmer water, we will only have more bitterness and dryness in the mouth.
Adding water that is too hot

Are there correct ways to drink tea?
A pure traditionalist would say to never add anything to the tea and never drink it with a large meal. Yeah…pure traditionalists are pretty boring.
We say drink your tea any way you like. Add a little stevia, sugar, honey, or agave to sweeten it. Put in a splash of milk or cream to make it rich and luxurious. Drink it hot. Drink it cold. Heck, make popsicles if you like!
Teas are wonderful no matter how you drink them. Make it as fun or traditional as you want. Life is too short to not enjoy your tea!

How to Take Herbs - Product Forms and Suggested Servings

Product Forms

Most HomeGrown Herbalist products are sold in three forms powders, tinctures and capsules. People often ask which form is best. The truth is, it matters very little how we get herbs into our body but there are some advantages to each form.
Powders: Powders are the least expensive form. Powders can be made into teas or tinctures or you can just put the powder into a little juice or water and drink it.
Tinctures: Tinctures are alcohol extracts of herbs. They act a little more quickly in the body and are very portable. Tinctures can be taken alone or mixed with a little juice or water.
Capsules: Capsules are my least favorite form personally. I believe that many herbs are more effective if capsules arent used.

Any of the above forms can be mixed with your morning smoothie or with yogurt, apple sauce etc... Tinctures mix really well with these products: Barleans Seriously Delicious Omega-3 Fish Oil. This is a great way to get tinctures into children and adults that are sensitive to yucky herb flavors.

Recommended Servings for Humans

For chronic or maintenance issues, twice daily is usually sufficient. For acute situations, dosing can be done more frequently.

Herbs and Adults

Powders for Adults: 1-2 rounded teaspoons 2-3 times daily.
Tinctures for Adults: 1/4 to 1 teaspoon 2-3 times daily.
Capsules for Adults: 4 capsules 2-3 times daily.

Herbs and Children

I dont recommend herb use in children under two years of age without consulting a qualified practitioner. When I do use herbs for children. I dose them based on weight compared to an adult...1/2 an adult...1/3 of an adult etc...

Herbs and Pets

All of our formulas were created so that they could use in either humans or in dogs and cats. Most dogs will eat herbs willingly if the powdered form is mixed with a little wet food. Tinctures can also be used. Most cats are very resistant to taking herbs willingly. For chronic or maintenance issues, twice daily is usually sufficient. For acute situations, dosing can be done more frequently.

Powders for Pets

Under 10 Pounds: 1/8 teaspoon twice daily
10-20 Pounds: 1/4 teaspoon twice daily
20-40 Pounds: 1/2 teaspoon twice daily
40-60 Pounds: 3/4 teaspoon twice daily
Over 60 Pounds: 1 rounded teaspoon twice daily

Tinctures for Pets:

Under 10 Pounds: 3 drops twice daily
10-20 Pounds: 5 drops twice daily
20-40 Pounds: 10 drops twice daily
40-60 Pounds: 20 drops twice daily
Over 60 Pounds: 30 drops twice daily

Capsules for Pets:

Under 10 Pounds:1/4 capsule twice daily
10-20 Pounds: 1/2-4 capsule twice daily
20-40 Pounds: 1 capsule twice daily
40-60 Pounds: 2 capsule2 twice daily
Over 60 Pounds: 3 capsules twice daily

The greatest idea ever! I have always had such a tough time deciding which new teas to buy and this is the perfect solution to my problem. No-one wants to pay a lot of money for a new tea and discover on the first cup that you aren’t a fan! These sample bags are an excellent size and give you plenty of cups to decide if you really like it and want to place a full order. I felt like I was opening a special gift when I folded back the tissue to see what was inside the box. I love how all of the beautiful shiny blue bags were arranged alphabetically and snuggled in a bed of crinkle shreddings to keep them in place. I love my sample box and can’t wait to try them all! Thank you Doc (and your helpers too)! 😀

I purchased the tea sampler for my daughter as she really liked the 40 Winks tea I shared with her over Christmas. The order arrived earlier than we expected since it was on backorder, so she was extremely excited! She has been sampling a new tea every day since she received it and is keeping track of her favorites so that I can order larger bags of those. Every day has been a success so far except for the coffee alternative, she doesn’t care for hazelnut (I don’t either) and it was too much to get past. I would love to try it without hazelnut if you ever make it. She is on day five so we’ll see what the rest brings!

I love the teas in general and the sampler is the perfect way to get others to try them. I may have an herbal convert in the making!

I have been blessed with these teas – samples are a great way to try them all. Every time I drink one, I am excited to know it is helping me and not hurting my body.
