Description :
Blue Cohosh is a perennial wildflower, native to Eastern North America, which grows to between 1 and 3 feet tall. The non-flowering plant has a single compound leaf. The flowering plant has a couple of compound leaves at the top of blueish green stem. Each yellow flower measures about 1/3 of an inch across and consists of 6 small equally-spaced petals. Internally, the root was used by early american colonists to induce labor in late-stage pregnancy and abortion in early-stage pregnancy. It was also used to treat epilepsy, rheumatism, and hiccups.
History and Folklore:
The roots of Blue Cohosh are rough. Cohosh is an Algonquian word that means rough. The rest of the name refers to the color of the stem. Blue Cohosh was included in the United States pharmacopoeia from 1882 to 1905.
Cultivation and Harvest:
Harvest the rhizome and root at the end of the summer. The rhizome is yellowish brown outside and whitish yellow inside. The root/rhizome combination can grow up to 4 feet long. Dry them after harvest to be chopped and ground.
