Origin of the name: Rumex is the old Latin name for the ship; acetosa from the Latin acetum = vinegar due to its sour taste. Crispus = frizzy in relation to the undulating leaves. The roots of Rumex crispus, as experiments by Gilbert and Lereboullet (Gilbert et Lereboullet, Nouveaux remèdes 1906, No. 16, p. 361.) have shown, are capable of absorbing iron contained in the soil in relatively large quantities and converting it into organic iron compounds , so that when the plants are sprinkled with ferrum carbonate solutions, roots with a content of about 1.5% iron can be obtained, which gave the investigators good results when administered to anemic and chlorotic patients. They consider the use of the amphoter to be all the more recommendable since the constipating effect of iron is corrected by the laxative of emodin and chrysophanoic acid. Rumex is one of the plants containing oxalic acid, which is detrimental to health due to frequent and abundant consumption. Acute poisoning is one of the greatest rarities. The case of poisoning by sorrel stalks described by Sueklin in 1886 is more than doubtful according to Kobert (R. Kobert, apprentice in intoxic., P. 220, Stuttgart 1893; see also Lewin, poisons and poisoning.) According to Kobert, chronic intoxication can be shown by the fact that sugar and calcium oxalate appear in the urine for weeks and months. After O. Geßner(O.
