Description :
Ashwagandha is a small shrub in the nightshade family. It grows to about two feet tall with alternating oval-shaped leaves coming off of hairy branches from a central stem. The leaves are about 4 inches long and two inches wide. Ashwagandha produces yellow/green flowers and bright red berries that form in a papery sheath. The leaves and berries are nutritional. The roots were used in Ancient Ayurvedic Medicines to support the joints and the nervous system. Externally, it was used to support the joints. Internally it was used for many things including to supposedly help support normal sleep patterns, reduce stress, and support the immune system.
History and Folklore:
The first writings about the benefits of Ashwagandha are in Ayurveda texts from roughly 3,000 – 4,000 years ago. In Ayurvedic Medicine, Ashwagandha is known as A Rasayana. A Rasayana refers to an herb that deeply rejuvenates.
Cultivation and Harvest:
Harvest the roots at the end of a plant’s first year. Cut them into smaller pieces to dry. Dried roots can be ground into powder for teas, tinctures and capsules.
Precautions:
Do not take if pregnant or nursing. Ashwagandha may interfere with medications used to lower blood sugar, reduce blood pressure or treat thyroid problems.
