It has three-lobed leaves with finely serrated edges and large, aromatic, purple and white flowers with a sweet scent that are from 2 to 3 inches across. Passionflower grows in relatively poor sandy soil and prefers full sun and a trellis or fence to wrap itself around. All above-ground parts of the plant are aromatic, and have a strong sweet fragrance. Passion flowers bloom from June to September, and possibly later when it has been cut during the season. They have tendrils that attach to tall grasses or whatever they can hold on to climb.Teas and tinctures of Passionflower are used to help calm the mind and spirit.
History and Folklore:
Passionflower got its name from Christian missionaries who arrived in South America in the 16th century. They saw in the plant, a symbol of the death of Jesus Christ. The corona, or double row of colored filaments, signifies the crown of thorns around Christ’s head. The five stamens and the three spreading styles with their flattened heads symbolize the wounds and the nails respectively. The vines tendrils resemble the whips used to scourge Christ.
